Candle Safety
As candles become extremely popular in home decorating these days, this unfortunately increases the rise in house fires. Candles are used for light during power outages, general home decorating and decorating for holidays such as Halloween and Christmas. With this increased use of candles, you will want to be aware of the fire hazards candles present and ways to avoid a fire.
* Keep candles at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn, this includes people, furniture, pets and curtains.
* Place the candle in a sturdy, non-combustible holder.
* Do not place a candle near a window, so that all exits will be accessible and there is potential for the curtain to catch fire.
* Never leave children unattended with candles burning and always keep them out of reach of children.
* Always blow candles out when you leave the house or go to sleep.
* Keep the wax pool free of all debris and trimmed wicks.
* Trim all candlewicks to 1/4 inch to prevent uneven burning and dripping.
* Candles should be kept away from drafts, vents and ceiling fans. This will help avoid uneven burning, flare-ups, sooting and drafts can blow something light into a candle where it could catch fire.
* Always burn candles in a well-ventilated area.
* Never touch or move a burning candle or while the wax is still hot.
* Don't burn a candle all the way down. Extinguish the flame if it comes to close to the holder. Discontinue use when the candle has 2 inches of wax left r a 1/2 inch from the container.
* Never use a knife or sharp object to remove wax from a glass container, this could weaken, scratch or break the glass after subsequent use.
* Use a snuffer to extinguish a candle. It is the safest way to prevent wax splatters.
* Place burning candles at least 3 inches apart from each other.
* Never use water to extinguish a candle, this could cause wax to splatter or the glass to break.
* NEVER use a candle as a night light.
* Extinguish a candle if it repeatedly smokes, flickers or the flame becomes too high. Let the candle cool, trim the wick and check for drafts before relighting the candle.
* Consider using flameless candles.
