Boating & Water Safety
With warm weather upon us, we seek to cool off by swimming and enjoying the water with boating and other watersports. This increases our risk of drowning and boating injuries.
- Never swim alone.
- ALWAYS wear a personal floatation device (PFD) when in or around water.
- Get out of the water immediately if you hear thunder or see lightning (If you can hear thunder, you can get struck by lightning).
- Never jump or dive in water unless a lifeguard or adult says it is safe.
- Turn off the boat & extinguish smoking materials before refueling the boat.
- Everyone needs a seat on a boat.
- Learn how to swim.
- Check the weather before going out.
- Stay alert, and clear of large vessels and buoys.
- Designate an assistant skipper and make sure they know how to operate the boat.
- Take a boating course and consider a free "vessel check" from the U.S. Coast Guard.
- Develop a float plan and let friends, family or the staff of the marina know where your going and how long you expect to be gone. These should include: name, address, phone number of all passengers, boat type & registration, trip itinerary, and communication & signal equipment on board the vessel.
